Biographical Notes
The birthplace and birth year of Dick/Richard are unknown. Tooker purchased Dick from Isaac Arnold of Southold in 1684 and was part of Tooker's marriage contract with widow Hannah Elton. "[should she outlive him], that whatever land, housing, or other estate he shall died seised of within the Township of Southold shall remaine and belong to the said Hannah Elton dureing her life—together with the sole use and full possession of his Negro slave named Richard, whom he bought of Mr. Isaac Arnold." He was likely the one enslaved person enumerated in Captain Tucker's household in Southold in 1686. Tooker's will, written in 1688, didn't mention Dick, but a later codicil, written in 1690, did.
