Notes

In 1811, Nathan Cooper manumitted Gad as well as his wife Esther. It is stipulated in their manumission that any male children that Esther has will be indentured to Cooper at the age of seven years old.

In 1814, Judge Abraham Miller describes Gad as "a black man forty-six years old, thick set and about five feet eight inches high" (17).

In 1826, a "Gadd Cooper" was recorded as receiving a payment of $3.25 as part of the "payments made to Laborers on the Sloop Fair American." This "Gadd" is, with a very high degree of certainty, the Gad that was manumitted by Nathan Cooper in 1811.
