On the 1865 census, Esther is listed as the head of household. Her husband Henry (HENR2) is not listed on the 1865 East Hampton census. Henry and Charles (CHAR4), Henry and Esther's son, perished fighting in the Civil War.

On the 1870 and 1880 census, Esther's occupation is listed as "keeping house." Esther is buried in the St. David African Methodist Episcopal Zion Cemetery in Sag Harbor, NY.

She is the daughter of David Hempstead, Senior, of Shelter Island, NY.
